Tooth Whitening
Your home tooth whitening kit contains carbamide peroxide gel and trays which have been made for your mouth. It is essential that you follow the instructions given by the dentist.
Brush your teeth. Apply the gel to the trays as instructed. Only a small amount is needed, a “matchstick head” should be plenty for each tooth to be whitened. Place the trays in your mouth and remove any excess material from the gums and roof of mouth. Wear overnight or for a minimum of 2 hours.
Rinse mouth afterwards, brush teeth and trays.
Repeat this procedure every day until desired shade reached. This usually takes about 2 weeks. The darker your teeth, the longer treatment usually takes and more top up treatment may be required. A dentist will contact you during this time to ensure you are comfortable with the procedure. If you have any concerns we are always availalbe to advise.
Porcelain crowns or veneers will not change colour, nor will fillings. Variation in shade change is common eg Canine teeth often appear “yellower”. Do not worry if you notice white spots on your teeth, they were already there but not obvious and will fade. We have several options to resolve sensitivity.
Temporary sensitivity is a common side effect of home whitening. Stop the treatment for a couple of days if needed to allow the teeth to settle. You can use a sensitive toothpaste to ease the discomfort. Patients with existing sensitivity should expect their symptoms to increase during treatment. Please call us if you have any concerns.
Do not smoke during whitening treatment. Do not use whitening products if you are or become pregnant, or if your medical history changes in any way during treatment. Discontinue treatment if you experience any problems which you would like to discuss and contact us for advice.
During treatment take care to avoid highly coloured foods and drink such as red wine, coke, ketchup, spices, tomatoes, tea, coffee, curry etc. Maintain a good oral hygiene regime.
The results achieved are not permanent nor guaranteed and repeated treatment and top-up is necessary at our discretion to achieve and maintain a brighter shade. Do not be tempted to over bleach your teeth. Only use as instructed .
Whitening products supplied by dentists have been shown to be safe on teeth and gums.
